Brussels Christmas Market
The most famous and popular
Christmas market in Brussels
takes place annually in St. Catherine’s Square (Place Sainte-Catherine / Sint-Katelijneplein). The market opens in late November and runs through early January. It is considered one of the best gourmet Christmas markets in Europe because here guests can taste not only traditional Christmas treats but also exquisite delicacies such as mushroom on toast, steamed snails, oysters, and famous Belgian chocolate.
Brussels’s main Christmas market is called
Winter Wonders
(Plaisirs d’hiver / Wintepret). It lasts for five weeks – five weeks filled with memorable encounters, bright colors, amazing flavors, fantastic Christmas gifts and souvenirs, providing its guests with an unforgettable holiday experience. The Brussels Christmas market is one of the highlights of the Christmas season in the city. It attracts thousands of tourists from across the country and abroad.
The market usually features about
200 or 250 stalls and booths
offering a wide range of traditional Christmas goods including beautiful Christmas decorations, jewelry, toys, handicrafts, knitwear, accessories, etc. If you need to check several items off your Christmas shopping list, the market is the perfect place for you to go! All stalls are beautifully adorned with thousands of Christmas lights, creating a fairy tale atmosphere.
Along with Christmas souvenirs, the Brussels Christmas market offers
local delicacies to suite any taste
. Here you can treat yourself to delicious Belgian chocolate, different kinds of waffles with a variety of toppings, cougnou (traditional Christmas bread), spicy honey cakes, fries with different sauces, and more. And of course, there are drinks! There are Belgian beers, jenever (the national spirit of Belgium flavored with juniper), mulled wine and hot chocolate.
As far as
entertainment
is concerned, the Belgian Christmas market hosts live performances, nativity plays and other attractions for visitors of all ages. The market is especially famous for its tall Christmas tree bedecked with thousands of lights, a large ice rink, and a 55-meter high Ferris wheel.
